⚡️ Adaptalux Flexible LEDs I use → https://tr.ee/FlexibleLEDs
🎉 Macro Lighting Library → https://tr.ee/MacroLibrary

I've spent years photographing tiny subjects, but I've rarely pushed beyond 1:1 magnification. So I decided to see what happens when I go a little further.

With a couple of extreme macro lenses from Laowa, including the new Aksen 5:1–10:1, some Adaptalux flexible LED lights, and a lot of patience, I headed into the forest to explore a world that's almost impossible to see with the naked eye.

Things didn't always go as planned. At these magnifications, even the smallest movement can ruin a photograph, and getting everything sharp turned out to be quite a challenge.

But that's part of what makes photography so rewarding. Sometimes it's less about the final image and more about everything you experience along the way.

👇 If you have experience with extreme macro photography and noticed something I could've done better, let me know in the comments! I could use a few tips! 😅

Why did M-Pesa succeed in Kenya but fail in other countries like South Africa, India and Romania? Kenyans now move more than twice their country’s GDP through M-Pesa every year. In South Africa, the same app got 76,000 users and shut down.

In this episode of Africa on Monday, I break down the three conditions behind M-Pesa’s success, the 2008 government audit that almost shut it down, and why Nigeria waited until 2022 to let MTN and Airtel run mobile money banks.

For centuries, the origins of the Somali people have been discussed through language, migration, history, and ancient trade routes. But DNA research is revealing a much more complicated story. Genome-wide studies of Somali populations show a strong East African genetic foundation alongside substantial West Eurasian ancestry, reflecting ancient population movements and admixture in the Horn of Africa.

In this video, we explore what scientists have discovered about Somali DNA, Cushitic ancestry, ancient migration, and the genetic connections linking populations across the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea. One major study found evidence that Cushitic ancestry itself reflects a mixture involving ancestry related to Arabia and African populations, challenging the idea that modern populations can always be traced to one isolated ancestral source.

So where did the Somali population come from? What happened thousands of years ago across the Horn of Africa? And what can modern DNA actually tell us about this remarkable history?

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has commissioned 280 Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF) officer cadets, urging them to remain focused on their military careers and avoid distractions that could derail their service.

President Museveni, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF, made the remarks today during the commissioning ceremony for Officer Cadets Intake 09/26 and Bachelor of Defence Studies Intake 05/23/29 at Uganda Military Academy-Kabamba in Mubende District.
The 280 commissioned cadets included 187 professionals who began training in February 2026 and 87 Bachelor of Defence Studies cadets who started their training on September 18, 2023. The latter class initially enrolled 100 cadets, but 14 did not complete the programme. Eleven of those commissioned are female.
Six additional officer cadets received training abroad, including Officer Cadets Ruhamya Kainerugaba and Andrew Bakira, who trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in the United Kingdom, while four others trained in India.
The ceremony was attended by Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba and his wife, Mrs. Charlotte Kainerugaba; Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka; Uganda Military Academy-Kabamba Commandant Brig. Gen. Saad Katemba; and other senior military officers.
Lt. Col. John Mugarura commanded the parade.
Outstanding cadets received awards for their performance before the newly commissioned officers took the oaths of allegiance and secrecy.
Economy key to strong National Defence:
Congratulating the graduates, President Museveni described their commissioning as the beginning of a long journey of service in an institution whose effectiveness depends on discipline, commitment and sound leadership.
“First of all, congratulations to the graduates. You have started a long journey in a very honourable organisation, the UPDF. If you do your part and don't get diverted, you will make a good contribution,” he said.
He thanked the cadets’ families, the academy and the UPDF leadership for supporting their training.
President Museveni emphasised that a strong economy is one of the fundamental pillars of an effective national defence system, arguing that the military must work alongside other institutions to protect the country’s productive sectors.
The President also called for a firm response to crime in communities, particularly the theft of livestock distributed to farmers under the Parish Development Model (PDM).
“When you get thieves stealing the goats and cows from the farmers which have been given by the PDM, that's sabotage. It shouldn't be tolerated,” he warned.
Discipline, technology and training:
President Museveni stressed that the relationship between the army and the population remains critical to national security, urging officers to maintain discipline and demonstrate respect for the communities they serve.
“The strategic relationship between the army and the people [is important]. The army must always make sure that it is like fish in the sea,” he said, recalling how public support helped the liberation struggle despite shortages of weapons.
On regional security, President Museveni urged African countries to strengthen strategic coordination and build joint capabilities across land, air, maritime and space domains.
“We need to coordinate with our brother African countries to work together so that we create capacity on land, air, at sea and even space because that's where the war is now,” he said.
He commended the CDF and other commanders for efforts to fight corruption and improve the welfare of soldiers, including better accommodation and pay.
President Museveni said the government would also prioritise modernising military training institutions, adding that the facilities should meet high international standards.
“I have told the CDF and his commanders that we need to prioritise these training infrastructures. They can be made state-of-the-art. It is good to have the best in the world when you are training from here,” he said.
He further urged the newly commissioned officers to safeguard their health, drawing on his own experience of maintaining an active life at the age of 82.
In his remarks, Gen. Kainerugaba said the security situation in Uganda and the wider region was relatively calm, with UPDF peace and stabilisation missions in the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan and Somalia continuing to make progress.
The CDF warned that the security agencies would not tolerate the criminal activities and were coordinating operations to identify, arrest and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“No effort will be spared until the sanctity of the right to life and property is fully restored for all the people in our country,” he said.
Gen. Kainerugaba commended instructors across military training institutions for their dedication and congratulated the new officers on their decision to serve the country.

Babu Owino is going where Kenyan presidents have been scared to go: LAND 😳 The Embakasi East MP wants the Kirima family to show proof that they own 1,000 acres in Nairobi (Njiru): copies of IDs, sale agreements, proof of payment, witnesses in court. More than 10,000 families live on that land, and many of them paid for it already. We love the energy... but Babu, do you really want to go here? 🫣

We go back to the Ndung'u Land Report: Kibaki's promise to recover grabbed public land, a commission in 2003, a report that found over 200,000 illegal titles (most of them handed out around the 1992, 1997 and 2002 elections), names like the Kenyattas and the Mois, and... almost nothing done about it. Then we talk about how dangerous Nairobi land deals have been for the people involved. Plata o plomo.

Also on this episode:
🛢️ KPC shares: 4.5 billion shares of Kenya Pipeline Company quietly change hands. Uganda's government and NSSF are among the top shareholders, and the deal is 24.76%, just under the 25% that needs CMA approval. Connect it to the Lamu refinery.
🔥 Kalonzo on the Migwena memorial chaos: "Follow the money, follow the vehicles." Ndolo's church comments, and how Sifuna gets pulled in without anyone naming him.
🗣️ DCP's John Methu says Ruto must go. We've heard that one before.
⚖️ Ruto's "Usawa" speech: 1.5% from a senator vs 1.5% from someone earning KSh 30,000. Affordable housing in Kapseret but not Mathare? Do Nairobi's slums first.

Should Babu go after the land? Tell us in the comments 👇

A Black American couple left Virginia and moved more than 7,000 miles away to build a new life in Nairobi, Kenya. Today, they pay $1,800 per month for a luxury three-bedroom home featuring en-suite bathrooms, a swimming pool, gym, sauna, movie theater, private parking and 24-hour security—amenities they say would cost significantly more in the United States.

But their relocation came with a major setback. After leaving their U.S. business in the hands of others, the company—which had grown from approximately $300,000 to nearly $1 million in annual revenue—collapsed within five months.

In this episode, Veronica and Okino Oakley share the truth about relocating from America to Kenya, raising their children abroad, housing and utility costs in Nairobi, cultural differences and rebuilding their businesses after a devastating financial loss. They also explain how newcomers can find homes for around $450 per month—and why proper research is essential to avoid being overcharged.

This documentary explores the deep cultural meaning behind the Luhya circumcision ceremony, known locally as Imbalu — one of Kenya’s most respected traditional rites of passage.

Filmed in Bungoma County, this story reveals how young boys are prepared, celebrated, and transformed into men through music, dance, and community unity.
Featuring songs from legendary Luhya artists like Steve Kay, Sammy Mangara, Opeta wa Musungu, Papa Sowetoo, and Godricks Kitui Wanyonyi, this film captures the rhythm and pride of a people deeply rooted in heritage.

From the traditional songs and ululations to the emotional moments of courage, this is more than a documentary — it’s a preservation of identity, bravery, and African tradition.
